Title : ADVANCED CROPPING TECHNOLOGY OF MAIZE (Zea mays L.) IN SERBIA
Abstract : Studies on maize growing practices have been performed in the Maize Research Institute, Zemun Polje since its establishment. Numerous studies realised in accordance with contemporary global trends indicated the direction of development of maize growing practices with the aim to use the genetic potential of newly derived hybrids. Although, the genetic potential of the yield of maize hybrids grown in Serbia is 10 to 15 t/hа, the recorded average yields are significantly lower. The experimental trials with the application of standard growing practices conducted during the fifteen growing seasons showed that the maize yield varied from 10.46 to 11.38 t/hа. The obtained results indicated that, for the region of central Serbia, contemporary maize growing systems should include a correctly applied crop rotation with legumes (soybean), conventional tillage with deep autumn ploughing, precisely determined plant density and the time of sowing. Another important factor is the application of fertilisers the content and formulation of which are adjusted to the requirements of the cultivated plant and irrigation tuned to the requirements of crops and climate in terms of norms and frequency of the application.
