Dr. Sead Sabanadzovic, a native of Montenegro, is a Professor at the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology and Plant Pathology of Mississippi State University, USA. After graduating in Agriculture from the University of Sarajevo in 1989 he briefly worked at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of the Republic of Montenegro before pursuing further education abroad.
He obtained M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Plant Virology in 1993 (Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari, MAI-B; Italy) and 1997 (University of Bari; Italy), respectively. From 1997 to 2003 he worked at the MAI-B with a research/didactic appointment. In January 2003 he moved to the University of California, Davis (USA) where he worked until May 2004, when he joined Mississippi State University as an Associate Professor. While working at MSU, Dr. Sabanadzovic received tenure in 2010 and has been promoted to the rank of Full Professor in 2012. In addition to his research duties, Dr. Sabanadzovic currently teaches two Courses at Mississippi State University. During his Italian work experience, and currently at MSU, Dr. Sabanadzovic served as a major professor or committee member for a number of MSc and PhD students.
Dr. Sabanadzovic is actively involved in taxonomy/nomenclature of plant- and mycoviruses. He is a member of three Study Groups of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (i.e. viruses belonging to families Tymoviridae, Partitiviridae and Endornaviridae).
Dr. Sabanadzovic acts as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Plant Pathology (journal of the Italian Phytopathological Society) and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Plant Pathology and Microbiology (new “Open access” on-line journal). He also serves as an ad hoc referee for 15 international journals in the field of plant and general virology. Dr. Sabanadzovic is member of several professional associations. Furthermore, he is the elected vice-Chair of the Plant Pathogen and Disease Detection Committee of the American Phytopathological Society (APS) and a member of APS-APHIS Working Group on Prevalent Viruses in the USA.
His current research interests include viruses of blackberries and ornamentals, dsRNA viruses, virus-host co-evolution and the biodiversity/ecology of viruses in non-agronomic environments. Since his appointment at MSU, Dr. Sabanadzovic has established collaborative research network with numerous institutions in the USA and abroad.
Results of Dr Sabanadzovic’s research have been documented in more than 60 papers published in prestigious peer-reviewed journals. He also co-authored several book chapters and presented over 100 invited and/or regular presentations at various international conferences.
