At the University of Florence, Italy obtained a Laurea degree (equivalent to MSc) in Geological Sciences in 1976. He further specialized in river dynamics and sediment transport processes during his CNR fellowship (equivalent to a Ph.D.) at the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Florence, in 1980. He then dedicated nearly two decades as a lecturer at the University of Florence, before moving to the University of Ferrara, where he served as Professor of Physical Geography and Geomorphology from 1998 to 2016. Since 2017, he has been a Specially Awarded Professor at the International Platform for Dryland Research and Education (IPDRE) at Tottori University, Japan, continuing his extensive research on dryland environments, land degradation, and sustainable land management. He is also Adjunct professor of the University of Bologna, Department of Education Studies "Giovanni Maria Bertin"
